Paul

Paul of Tarsus, once the church's fiercest enemy, became its greatest missionary and theologian. Through his letters — nearly half the books of the New Testament — the gospel of grace was explained and carried across the Roman world.

Saul the persecutor

Born in Tarsus, a Roman citizen, trained under Gamaliel, and "a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee" (Acts 23:6), Saul zealously persecuted the church, consenting to the death of Stephen (Acts 8:1) and dragging believers to prison.

The Damascus road

On his way to arrest Christians in Damascus, the risen Jesus confronted him in blinding light: "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" (Acts 9:4). Converted and commissioned, Saul — now Paul — became "a chosen vessel" to bear Christ's name "before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel" (Acts 9:15).

Missionary journeys

Paul undertook three great missionary journeys, planting churches across Asia Minor and Greece, reasoning in synagogues and marketplaces, and enduring beatings, imprisonments, and shipwreck (2 Corinthians 11:24–27). He wrote letters — Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, and more — that unfold justification by faith, life in the Spirit, and the church as the body of Christ.

Finishing the course

Arrested in Jerusalem, Paul appealed to Caesar and was taken to Rome, where he continued preaching even in chains. Tradition holds he was martyred under Nero. His own epitaph stands: "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith" (2 Timothy 4:7).
