The Ministry of Jesus
The public ministry of Jesus is a span of perhaps three years that the four Gospels treat with extraordinary attention — the most closely documented few years in the Bible. It begins at his baptism and ends at the cross and empty tomb, and within it Jesus announces and embodies the arrival of the kingdom of God.
It opens at the Jordan, where John baptizes Jesus and the Spirit descends, and in the wilderness, where he overcomes temptation. Jesus then gathers disciples and ministers largely in Galilee — teaching in synagogues and on hillsides, healing the sick, casting out demons, and announcing good news to the poor and outcast. His teaching, from the Sermon on the Mount to the parables of the kingdom, redefines righteousness as a matter of the heart and provokes growing opposition from the religious leaders. As the ministry advances he sets his face toward Jerusalem, foretelling his death, until the final week — the triumphal entry, the temple confrontation, the Last Supper, the arrest in Gethsemane, the trials, and the crucifixion — followed by the resurrection.
The chronology is approximate: most place the ministry around AD 27–30, framed by the crucifixion in AD 30 or 33. This closer look sits inside the broader Gospels era. Its significance is hard to overstate: in these few years the eternal Son lives the faithful human life Israel never managed, demonstrates the kingdom in word and deed, and moves with deliberate purpose toward the cross. Everything the Gospels record about his teaching and miracles is offered as evidence of who he is — and as the necessary backdrop to why his death and resurrection change everything.
