Ephesians 6:11
6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
KJV
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
What does Ephesians 6:11 mean?
Paul calls believers to put on God's full armor so they can stand firm against the devil's schemes — a battle that is spiritual, not merely human.
"Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." So begins Paul's picture of the Christian's spiritual warfare.
Context
Ephesians closes by naming the real conflict: "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against... spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12). Verses 13-18 then detail each piece — truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the word of God, and prayer.
Key words
"The whole armour" (Greek panoplia) means the complete kit — leaving none off. Notice it is "of God": the armor is his provision, not our manufacture. The repeated goal is to "stand" — this is defensive steadfastness, holding ground that Christ has already won, against the devil's "wiles" (cunning strategies).
How it has been read
The church has read this as sober realism about spiritual opposition and confident hope in God's provision. The believer does not fight for victory in their own strength but stands in armor God supplies, "strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might" (Ephesians 6:10).
