2 Timothy 1:7
1:6 Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
KJV
For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
For God has not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
What does 2 Timothy 1:7 mean?
Paul reminds Timothy that the Spirit God gives is not one of fear but of power, love, and self-discipline — fuel for bold, faithful service.
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
Context
Paul writes from prison to a younger, perhaps timid Timothy, urging him to "stir up the gift of God" and not be ashamed of the gospel (2 Timothy 1:6-8). Verse 7 is the reason he can be bold: the Spirit God gave is not a spirit that produces fear.
Key words
"Fear" here is timidity or cowardice that shrinks back. Against it stand three gifts: "power" (strength for service and suffering), "love" (the motive that drives ministry), and "a sound mind" (self-control, sober good sense). Together they equip Timothy to serve courageously.
How it has been read
Christians have drawn courage from this verse in the face of fear — not by self-talk alone, but by remembering who the Spirit is and what he gives. Read in context, it is less a charm against anxiety than a summons to faithful boldness, grounded in the Spirit's power, love, and sound-mindedness.
