Philippians 4:19
4:18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God. I have all: or, I have received allBut my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
KJV
My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
What does Philippians 4:19 mean?
Paul assures the generous Philippians that the God they gave to will himself supply all their need out of his riches in Christ.
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." This is a promise of provision, set within a thank-you note.
Context
The Philippians had sent Paul a gift in his need (Philippians 4:10-18). Having received their generosity, Paul turns it into a promise: the God they served by giving will not leave them lacking. The promise is addressed first to generous, sacrificial givers.
Key words
"Need" — not every want, but genuine need. "According to his riches in glory" measures the supply by God's infinite resources, not merely out of them. "By Christ Jesus" names the channel of every blessing.
How it has been read
Christians have leaned on this verse in seasons of want, while reading it in context: it is not a blank check for prosperity but an assurance that the God who supplies is rich and faithful. Like Paul himself, believers learn contentment in plenty and in want (Philippians 4:11-13), trusting the Supplier more than the supply.
