Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.

And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou art:

Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. Take: Heb. Give

Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.

Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will shew thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee. many: Heb. generation and generation

He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. led: or, compassed

O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.

Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. matters: or, speech

But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? understanding: Heb. hearing

And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; long life: Heb. many days discern: Heb. hear

Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.

And Chenaniah, chief of the Levites, was for song: he instructed about the song, because he was skilful. was for: or, was for the carriage: he instructed about the carriage song: Heb. lifting up

So the number of them, with their brethren that were instructed in the songs of the LORD, even all that were cunning, was two hundred fourscore and eight.

And they cast lots, ward against ward, as well the small as the great, the teacher as the scholar.

Also Jonathan David's uncle was a counsellor, a wise man, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons: scribe: or, secretary son: or, Hachmonite

And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

And he dealt wisely, and dispersed of all his children throughout all the countries of Judah and Benjamin, unto every fenced city: and he gave them victual in abundance. And he desired many wives. many wives: Heb. a multitude of wives

And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper. in the visions: Heb. in the seeing of God

And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all that could skill of instruments of musick.

And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,

And I gathered them together to the river that runneth to Ahava; and there abode we in tents three days: and I viewed the people, and the priests, and found there none of the sons of Levi. abode: or, pitched

Then sent I for Eliezer, for Ariel, for Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for Nathan, and for Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.

And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. that: Heb. that understood in hearing

And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. from: Heb. from the light

Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. the Tirshatha: or, the governor

And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;

And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.

Is there iniquity in my tongue? cannot my taste discern perverse things? my taste: Heb. my palate

Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not: he passeth on also, but I perceive him not.

For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?

Lo, mine eye hath seen all this, mine ear hath heard and understood it.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.

What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? mark, and afterwards we will speak.

I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.

Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:

Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

Lo, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.

I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.

I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding.

Great men are not always wise: neither do the aged understand judgment.

Yea, I attended unto you, and, behold, there was none of you that convinced Job, or that answered his words:

Also can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, or the noise of his tabernacle?

Hearken unto this, O Job: stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.

Hast thou perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if thou knowest it all.

That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof, and that thou shouldest know the paths to the house thereof? to the bound: or, at, etc

Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

To the chief Musician upon Nehiloth, A Psalm of David. Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my meditation.

Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults.

Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.

Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

He fashioneth their hearts alike; he considereth all their works.

For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.

Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath. both: Heb. as living as wrath

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness: all the foundations of the earth are out of course. out: Heb. moved

A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.

Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.

Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.

JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments.

The wicked have waited for me to destroy me: but I will consider thy testimonies.

I understand more than the ancients, because I keep thy precepts.

Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.

I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting: give me understanding, and I shall live.

TAU. Let my cry come near before thee, O LORD: give me understanding according to thy word.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.

To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. the interpretation: or, an eloquent speech

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.

And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, the youths: Heb. the sons

O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.

They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.

In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. of understanding: Heb. of heart

A scorner seeketh wisdom, and findeth it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understandeth.

The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going.

Wisdom resteth in the heart of him that hath understanding: but that which is in the midst of fools is made known.

The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness.

The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.

A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool. entereth: or, aweth more a wise man, than to strike a fool an hundred times

Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

The heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.

Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge. will beware: Heb. will be cunning

Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth his way. directeth: or, considereth

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged. by: or, by men of understanding and wisdom shall they likewise be prolonged

Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.

Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father. is a companion: or, feedeth gluttons

The rich man is wise in his own conceit; but the poor that hath understanding searcheth him out. own: Heb. eyes

The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.

A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.

The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. the honourable: Heb. a man eminent in countenance eloquent: or, skilful of speech

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! in their own sight: Heb. before their face

And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not. indeed, but understand: or, without ceasing, etc: Heb. in hearing, etc

Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: a valiant: or, many people

They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. doctrine: Heb. the hearing?

From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report. to: or, when he shall make you to understand doctrine

Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. proceed: Heb. add

Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?

The heart also of the rash shall understand knowledge, and the tongue of the stammerers shall be ready to speak plainly. rash: Heb. hasty plainly: or, elegantly

With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? instructed: Heb. made him understand understanding: Heb. understandings?

Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth?

Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. no: or, nothing formed of God

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old.

They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. shut: Heb. daubed

So shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. greedy: Heb. strong of appetite can: Heb. know not to be satisfied

The righteous perisheth, and no man layeth it to heart: and merciful men are taken away, none considering that the righteous is taken away from the evil to come. merciful: Heb. men of kindness, or, godliness from: or, from that which is evil

For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing. over: or, over to

For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through?

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come; and send for cunning women, that they may come:

The anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have executed, and till he have performed the thoughts of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.

The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.

Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Daniel: or, he made Daniel understand

And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. touched: or, none touched him in the earth a notable: Heb. a horn of sight

And I heard a man's voice between the banks of Ulai, which called, and said, Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.

So he came near where I stood: and when he came, I was afraid, and fell upon my face: but he said unto me, Understand, O son of man: for at the time of the end shall be the vision.

And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. are: Heb. are accomplished

And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.

In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding. to: Heb. to make thee skilful of

At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. commandment: Heb. word greatly: Heb. a man of desires

In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia a thing was revealed unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar; and the thing was true, but the time appointed was long: and he understood the thing, and had understanding of the vision. long: Heb. great

And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. greatly: Heb. of desires upright: Heb. upon thy standing

Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.

Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.

For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant.

And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.

Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.

And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things?

Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.

I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your spouses when they commit adultery: for themselves are separated with whores, and they sacrifice with harlots: therefore the people that doth not understand shall fall. I will not: or, Shall I not fall: or, be punished

Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall fall therein.

But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor.
